Wir haben zwei Verzeichnisse der gesamten Flora, die auf Atys zu finden ist:

  • Eines ausschließlich für die Intelligenten Pflanzen,
  • und eines für die nicht-aggressive Flora, detailliert nach Ökosystem:

Dieser Abschnitt listet die Flora von Atys so auf, wie sie sich dem Laien darstellt. Beachte, daß viele Angehörige dieser "Flora" nicht einmal wirklich Pflanzen sind, sondern eigentlich Pilze oder sogar unbewegliche Tiere. Aber man muß sich schon ein wenig mit Botanik befassen, um das zu erkennen. Die Flora, auf die Du stoßen könntest, variiert je nach Ökosystem des Kontinents, auf dem Du dich befindest, sehr stark. Nur wenige Pflanzen kommen in mehreren Ökosystemen vor (z. B. der Olansi-Baum, der sowohl in der Wüste als auch in den Seenlanden vorkommt). Daher ist die Flora nach Ökosystemen geordnet.

Der Flyner ist eine so genannte "Luftpflanze". Sie hat nämlich die Besonderheit, dass sie leichter als Luft ist und nur durch eine sichtbare knollige Wurzel am Boden gehalten wird. Diese Eigenschaft ermöglicht es der Pflanze, ihren empfindlichsten Teil außerhalb der Reichweite von Pflanzenfressern zu halten, die sie gerne fressen würden (5 bis 10 Meter über dem Boden), während sie gleichzeitig sehr groß sein kann, um ein Maximum an Licht zu absorbieren.

Das Blatt eines jungen Flyners ist so leicht, dass ein einfacher Windhauch ein abgeschnittenes Stück wegtragen kann. Tatsächlich sind es aber die Früchte (hohle Zapfen) unter dem abgerundeten Blatt, die für den Hauptauftrieb sorgen und Teil einer ausgeklügelten Verbreitungsmethode sind. Sie sind mit einem sehr leichten Gas gefüllt, das von der Pflanze selbst produziert wird.

Die Blütezeit ist der Spätsommer, und eine einzelne Blüte erscheint über dem Blattlappen, der bei den größten Exemplaren einen Durchmesser von über zwei Metern erreichen kann.

An einem windigen Tag löst sich der Flyer von seiner Verankerungsbirne und erhebt sich schnell in den Himmel. Einige Tryker Ingeolianer glauben, dass sich das Gas in der Frucht ab einer bestimmten Höhe verändert und schwerer wird, so dass die Pflanze an einen anderen Ort fällt. Sobald die Frucht auf dem Boden liegt, bleibt sie am Boden haften und wird zur Ankerknolle für einen neuen Flyner, der den Zyklus von neuem beginnt.

Verwendung

Kulinarisches

Flyner haben wenig Geschmack und sind nicht nahrhaft. In Streifen geschnitten und gewürzt können sie aber auch andere, nahrhaftere Gerichte begleiten. Die Tryker genießen diese Pflanze bei Tisch und lassen sich immer wieder neue Zubereitungsarten einfallen. Die Zwiebeln sind nicht essbar.

Luft- und Raumfahrt

Der Eindruck der Leichtigkeit der Pflanze brachte die Tryker auf die Idee, sie für die Navigation in der Luft zu nutzen. In Wirklichkeit ist die Pflanze nicht leicht genug, um selbst eine Last zu tragen, aber ihre Form fängt den Wind sehr gut ein und kann über weite Strecken gleiten. Dieser sehr gute Halt im Wind ermöglichte es den Tryker-Sklaven zu fliehen[1], indem sie das untere Ende des Stiels abschneiden und sich daran festhalten.
